EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT

GREENHOUSE RAISED IN THUNDER BAY!

...Well, almost.

It's been a tough road. On and off for the past two weeks we've been raisin' and a buildin'. Our 'ready-to-assemble' greenhouse has been a bit of a hassle. And our crew is mostly composed of kids like me, with next to zero building skills. And it always seems to want to rain on the days we're out there building.

But dang it all, we're almost there. We've laid the base, put up the arches, attached the cross beams (with only minor persuasion,) pulled the plastic over the top, and even have a door that opens and closes! Say whaaaat!

Just the two end walls and we'll have something beyond beautiful that will even make our Southern Ontario readers jealous!

Now, here's the time where I get a little teary:

I really have to say thanks to everybody who has been helping to make this dream a reality. This little project is beyond lucky to have such positive, hard working, persistent and skillful people volunteering their time for us. Big shout outs to my project partners in crime Lisa and Erin W, and a million and five hundred thousand thank yous to Bryan, Krestrel, Erica, Joseph, Erin B, Will, Dave and Kevin for being so brilliant. I mean it guys. Without you we never could have come close to building this beasty.

And that's that!

I'll put pictures up when I figure out how... (?)

Check back in a few days for some news... I'm working on a way to get community service hours for highschool students if they start their own vegetable garden. :)

Yea you know you wanna gaaaarden.

Keep well!

Spring and Wigglers!

Hey there good lookin'!

It's been a while since you've heard from us, but not without reason. Winter is slowly, painfully slowly edging its way out of the city, and we are slowly make plans and preparations for spring! Here's what's in the works:

Red Wiggler compost bins, 5 of them, have been ordered! We're hoping to be able to raffle them off later in the summer, but for now, Cindy, Erin, Lisa and I will be giving them as much tender love and care as a worm could hope for, and in return the worms will provide us with rich, beautiful, worm poop, great for the garden! Hurray! lol. If you are interested in starting your own worm bin, check out the FAQ's on this site, Cathy's Crawly Composters where we ordered our worms from.

In greenhouse news, our crew is hoping to be able to head on out to visit our friends at Belluz Farms to work exchange for some valuable greenhouse knowledge. Yay! Kevin, the owner, is being really helpful to our crew, providing us with the kind of know-how only experience can teach.

For now, that's it. Feel free to go around shoveling and stomping on snow banks to encourage them to melt quicker, and keep your minds focused on spring! It's here, you can feel it in the air!

See ya!

The First Seed

Q: Greenhouse Affect? Isn't that the thing that's heating up our planet and causing global warming?

A: Not this time er'body. That's the greenhouse Effect. We're the Affect. And we are here for something different. We want to help YOU, by teachin' ya some of the good green earthy stuff.

All punks aboard?

Good!

My name is Heidi. I'm the project lead for this budding little greehouse adventure, here to plant the very first seed: a blog!

I think the best thing to do is to start by explaining exactly what our project is. Our aim is to create a youth run, youth oriented greenhouse in the heart of Thunder Bay. We welcome every and any youth to come on out and get involved by learning more about greenhouses, growing food, agriculture, our local community, and how dang good it feels to grow the food you eat. YEA BABY!

Uhh...but wait. Where is this greenhouse of awesome punk power anyways?

Ok well... We haven't built it yet. It's winter guys! But, we have ordered it- yay!- from our local friendly Thunder Bay Co-Op (Ben, the manager there is the most helpful sales clerk ever.) Weighing in at 16'x28', with polycarbonate siding and a sleek roof ventilation system, our mean green growing machine will be everything we need and more to house our budding plants!

Yea sure, we gotta wait for the snow to melt. But when it does...get ready Thunder Bay. We are coming. DUHN DUHN DUHN!

Keep checking back here for continual updates everybody, we'll be sure to keep you posted as everything progresses...
